I attended an interesting seminar a few holiday seasons ago and when thinking about what to write for this year I remembered it.
No matter what our circumstances, and no matter what hand we are dealt, the search for true contentment and happiness is at the heart of everyone’s goals, especially during the holidays.
The question, then, is how? How are we supposed to begin looking for it? About 120 of us were gathered in a room attending this seminar about finding a life’s purpose.
We were taught various skills and lessons about life. Suddenly, the speaker stopped and she started giving each of us in the room a helium-filled balloon on a 4-foot cord. She asked everyone to write their name on it using a Sharpie pen. All the balloons were then collected and taken to another room. Mine was red like all the other balloons.
Now, were let in that room with a 10-foot high ceiling and cords that came down to the six-foot level. And we were each asked to find the balloon which had their name written on it, within 5 minutes.
As you can imagine – total chaos. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, pushing, colliding with each other, jumping up, pulling balloons down and accomplishing nothing except frustration.
No one could find their balloons within the given five-minute time and we all returned to the other room empty-handed.
We then were told to go to the other room and randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it.
Within five minutes everyone was carrying the balloon with their name on it.
The speaker began: This is exactly happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness, you will get your own happiness.
And this is the purpose of human life. Bring JOY and happiness to everyone you meet this holiday season.
